Week 4: International Framework of Sustainable Development

In this week, we're going to learn about the International Framework of Sustainable Development and this time we're going to explore about some surfaces of:

  •  Key conventions, declarations agreement and framework of sustainable development
  •  Definition of Sejahtera and its concept

International Framework of Sustainable Development is a set of global agreements guiding countries to balance environmental protection, social progress, and economic growth. It began with the 1972 Stockholm Conference and includes milestones like the Rio Earth Summit (1992) and the Kyoto Protocol.

Key conventions, declarations agreement and framework of sustainable development

There were numerous of global issues being discussed through conferences which aimed to focus regarding the problems of the earth's environment. These global conferences help produce a proper platform for continuing the development of future strategies in tackling global issues through sustainable development.

  • Rio de Janeiro Conference

Objective: Address environmental degradation, sustainable development, and the balance between economic growth and environmental protection.

Major outcomes: This conference produced Rio Declaration which is a set of 27 principles guiding sustainable development and also Agenda 21 which is a comprehensive plan for sustainable development to be implemented globally, nationally, and locally. Not to mention the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) which is a framework agreement to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations and prevent dangerous human interference with the climate, setting the stage for later climate agreements like the Kyoto Protocol.

  • The Kyoto Protocol

Objective: The Kyoto Protocol aimed to fight climate change by requiring industrialized countries to legally commit to reducing their greenhouse gas emissions.

Major outcomes: The Kyoto Protocol required industrialized countries to cut their greenhouse gas emissions by 5% below 1990 levels. It offered options like trading emission allowances and funding projects in developing countries to help meet these targets. While not all major countries participated, it set the stage for future agreements, such as the Paris Agreement.

Without these conferences, agreements and conventions, we surely cannot achieve the SDGs to tackle our global issues that are still ongoing and need each of our small efforts.

Definition of Sejahtera and its concept

Sejahtera is literally defined as safety, prosperity, justice, comfort, and happiness. A sejahtera society is one that is peaceful and free from harm. From an individual perspective, it represents a balanced and harmonious state of being. While we cannot measure sejahtera quantitatively, we can cultivate it through small actions that promote our own peace and well-being. This practice contributes to the harmony and improvement of our families, communities, and nation. The concept of sejahtera encompasses holistic well-being, including physical health, economic prosperity, social harmony, environmental sustainability, cultural identity, and spiritual fulfillment. It emphasizes the importance of balance in achieving a fulfilling life for individuals and communities, aligning closely with sustainable development goals aimed at creating a peaceful and prosperous future for all.

Hope it is beneficial for all. See you!
